Before you can book a practical test, you will need to pass your theory test first. When you have passed, you will receive a pass certificate that you need to book and take your practical test. This certificate is valid for up to two years.

The theory driving test is an essential step in obtaining a full driving license. It’s designed to assess your knowledge of road rules, signs, and safe driving practices. Here's a guide to help you understand what to expect. Before starting to learn, it is a good idea to read The Highway Code.

Structure of the Theory Test

The test has two parts, both of which you must pass:

Note – if you do not pass one part, you will have to retake both.

1. Multiple-Choice Questions

Duration: 57 minutes

Questions: 50

Pass Mark: 43 out of 50

Content:

Highway Code

Road signs

Rules of driving

Alertness, attitude, safety margins, etc.

Question Types: Some are case study based, meaning there will be a situation you have to respond appropriately to.

And remember, you can always go back and review answers.

2. Hazard Perception

Duration: About 15 minutes

Videos: 14 clips (each approximately 1 minute long)

Pass Mark: 44 out of 75

Content: You click when you see a developing hazard.

Scoring: You score up to 5 points per hazard, based on how early you spot it.

Note – You can respond to hazards too early!

One clip will contain two developing hazards.
